Mathematics
Mathematics at Miquon is about making sense of the world. We believe children become confident mathematicians when they explore ideas, look for patterns, solve meaningful problems, and explain their thinking. Children build deep conceptual knowledge that helps them apply mathematics in new situations throughout their lives.Across every grade, children learn to reason, communicate, collaborate, and persevere. They develop computational fluency alongside flexible thinking, discovering that there is often more than one way to solve a problem.
Our Approach
Math has it's own dedicated block, but is also woven through the day at Miquon.
Children count, measure, build, estimate, compare, collect data, cook, design, play games, and investigate authentic questions. Whether kindergarteners are determining how many apples they picked on a field trip or sixth graders are comparing ratios and percentages in preparation for the Social Justice Data Fair, learning begins with meaningful experiences that invite curiosity.
Teachers guide children to:

Standards and Curricula:
We use National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards and research-based curricula—including Investigations in Kindergarten through Grade 5 and Illustrative Mathematics in Grade 6—alongside games, projects, mathematical discussions, and interdisciplinary experiences.

Learning Beyond the Math Block
Mathematics naturally connects with every part of a Miquon education.
Students measure ingredients while cooking, analyze scientific data, explore symmetry in art, investigate patterns in music, calculate budgets for class projects and fundraisers, and apply mathematical reasoning during outdoor exploration. These authentic experiences help students understand that mathematics is not an isolated subject—it is a powerful tool for understanding the world.
