Family Involvement

The fall is a busy time for events as we welcome everyone to school and build community with our new and returning families.  Fall events usually include:

Preschool/Kindergarten/1st Grade Work Party: A weekend morning before school starts for families to gather and work alongside each other and their teachers to ready the campus and classrooms for the school year. This event is a low-key way to meet the teachers while doing purposeful work together.

Open classrooms: A chance for 2nd-6th grade students and their families to come meet their teachers and see their classrooms.

New Family Welcome Night: Before the first board meeting of the year, adults from new families are welcomed to campus to mingle with board members in this casual weekday evening event.

Back to School Night: An adult event (with free childcare available) for grown-ups to meet teachers and hear more about the academic program for the year.

Campfire and Campout: Families Active @ Miquon hosts this annual opportunity to gather for s'mores and camping on campus.  

Open House: This weekend morning event is for prospective families but many current families volunteer as tour guides.

Grandparent/Grandfriends' Day: This is an opportunity for students to welcome their grandparent and grandfriends to campus on a school day for a visit and a peek into the day-to-day life on campus. There is also a virtual event held on a different day to include those who can't make it in person.

Fall-O-Ween: This afternoon activity provides students a choice of completing a craft or getting dressed up for a parade. Then, all of the students and families gather for a fall send-off.

Alumni Panel: This evening activity is a chance for current and prospective grown-ups to hear from our high school-age alumni about their time at Miquon and the transition to middle school.  

Winter is a bit quieter than fall on campus in terms of after-school events, but during the school day, children are deeply engaged in their learning and preparing for several exciting performances.

Winter Assembly: This off-campus event is held on the last day of school before Winter Break.  Each class performs music that they have been practicing in music class before we adjourn for the calendar year. It is a joyful way to be together.

Pancake Breakfast: Families Active @ Miquon organizes a pancake breakfast every winter.  Held on a weekend morning, it is an opportunity to gather and enjoy delicious pancakes, fresh off the griddle, while enjoying conversation with other families and playing on campus.  

Curriculum Night: Each year, the teaching team chooses one piece of the curriculum to share more about. This evening, adults-only event is an opportunity for current and newly-admitted families to learn more about one piece of the curriculum while being immersed in an evening of hands-on activities. 

Like many schools, spring can be a busy time.  Classes are usually hosting learning celebrations, and we are gearing up to both celebrate our graduates and welcome our newest students.

Spring Work Party: This weekend morning event is a chance for families to work alongside teachers and staff to beautify campus for the many spring events ahead. Then, we celebrate the hard work with a barbecue lunch.  

Arts and Science Show: This afternoon event is an opportunity for families to see the beautiful artwork that students have been working on all year as well as participate in and/or learn more about the science projects that students have been investigating. Fifth and sixth grade students are required to participate in the science portion while younger students have the opportunity to work on a project from home to bring in and share.

Open House: This weekday morning event is for prospective families but many current families act as volunteer tour guides.

Bike to School Day: This event is a low-key invitation for families to bike to school together.  After the rid to school, riders can gather for snacks and coffee before going to class.

Spring Fair: This event is our largest event of the year as well as the biggest in-person fundraiser for the school. It is an opportunity for current families as well as prospective families, alumni, and other community members to gather for an afternoon of games, entertainment, food, and conversation.  

Rising Preschool and Kindergarten/1st Grade Potlucks: These annual potlucks welcome current rising as well as incoming families in these grade bands for low-key community building on a weekday evening.

Skit Night: On the evening before graduation, the fifth graders perform skits to lightly roast their sixth grade classmates, the graduates. Families are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy the show.

Graduation: On the last school day of the year, this beautiful ceremony is attended by all second through fifth grade students as well as the families of the sixth graders and other community members.  One of the most unique parts of this weekday morning event is that each 6th grader gives a speech about themselves and their time at Miquon and then is presented with a hand-crafted individualized diploma honoring them.  

Preschool and Kindergarten/1st Grade Monthly Playdates: During the summer, a couple of families in both the Preschool and the Kindergarten/1st grade will volunteer to coordinate low-key class meet-ups at local parks.  It is an opportunity for new and current families to connect.

Pool Party: This event is held towards the end of the summer and is for new second through sixth grade families and their buddy families.  It is an opportunity for the newest families in our older grades to meet a few folks and become more comfortable on campus ahead of the school year starting.
