Our intentionally small Progressive school empowers preschool through sixth grade students to learn through hands-on exploration, deep investigation, collaboration, and play on our wooded campus.

Making Meaning from the Creek to the Classroom

Learning without Walls

From our creek to our Bamboo Forest and all 9 acres in between, we make big discoveries outside. These discoveries set off the process of generating questions, making predictions, researching, experimenting, and forming conclusions.

At Miquon, every group has an indoor classroom and a dedicated outdoor learning space. In addition to outdoor lessons woven throughout the day, preschool through first grade children have three outdoor Choice periods each day, while second through sixth graders have two.

Learning that Matters

Learning must be real. It has to count, and it has to matter to the children. They must do things at school that have purpose and application in their lives.

At Miquon, children learn through projects, problems, and genuine questions. 

A group of kindergartners, for example, noticed the fish pond near their classroom had frozen over. They had questions: Would the fish survive? What did fish need in winter? What should they do? They researched and determined they needed to change their own behavior. Then, they decided other children needed to know too. They wrote letters, made drawings, gave talks, and taught the entire community why the ice needed to stay intact. That's literacy, science, civic responsibility, and community — woven together because the children cared about something real.

Learning with Joy

Childhood should be fun, and children should find joy in learning. That joy comes from an inquisitive wonder at the world they inhabit and the confidence in their capacity to understand it.

At Miquon, we preserve time for play, outdoor exploration, creativity, movement, and social development. Children have fun and often do not know the difference between learning and play, but we sure do!

Intentionally Elementary

Miquon is intentionally an elementary school because we believe children thrive when school is designed around the needs of childhood itself. From preschool through sixth grade, students learn in an environment where play, exploration, creativity, and community remain central — even for our oldest students.

Our 6th graders step into meaningful leadership roles while continuing to benefit from the warmth, supervision, and developmental understanding of an elementary setting. At the same time, our program prepares students for the transition to middle school through increasing academic challenge, research and study skills, public speaking, collaboration, and self-advocacy.

Children should not have to rush toward adolescence before they are ready. Instead, Miquon provides a safe, supportive space to grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence before launching into the wider world.

 

One of the things I love most about Miquon is that when my son is asked by others what he loves about Miquon, his answer is always the same. He says, “I’m learning how to learn.”

He’s learning how to learn in this beautiful environment that promotes a sense of wonder of nature, that’s instilling joy of learning, and also [that is] helping him understand his responsibility for social justice.

So, I love how Miquon produces students who are creative and independent thinkers and learners but also understand themselves as members of a larger community at the school, the city, and the world.
