The Maple Syrup Story Quilt
Maryanne and Sherry's Group
First and Second Grade 2001-02As part of their study of farm life, the students in Maryanne and Sherry's group joined with partners from a class at the Hackett School in Philadelphia to tap the maple trees around the campus and turn the sap into delicious maple syrup. With some help from science teacher Tony and some older students, a lot of collected sap was made into a small and treasured amount of sweet, thick syrup to pour onto pancakes. To commemorate the event, Maryanne and Sherry's students made a paper quilt with help from Anne, the art teacher. Each child designed and made a quilt block. Some told about part of the actual syrup making process. Others focused on their relationship with their partner class at the Hackett School. Still others chose to depict related activities, such as gathering wood and roasting marshmallows over the remains of the fire that was used to reduce a great deal of sap down to a small amount of maple syrup (as Juliet's quilt square so graphically illustrates). By the time it was all over, many groups in the school had become involved in some way, from the nursery to some of the big fifth and sixth graders. Everyone agreed that the syrup was really delicious!
