Sara (Sally) Hertz '72 says "I'm thrilled to find an alumni section to this website. It's much more satisfying than an annual newsletter. I'm 39 now, inching closer to 40 every minute. I have been living in Dorking (!), a picturesque English town about 25 miles south of London, for the past six years with my English husband Jon and our two kids, Jeremy and Nathan. Jon schleps into London every day to work as a financial journalist for Bloomberg, while I continue working for World Wildlife Fund developing its major giving programme. Every time we go back to Philadelphia to visit, I make the kids go to Miquon with me and their jaws always drop as we turn into the drive. It's a far cry from their conservative, uniform-wearing educational experience. Even though I still can't do long division, I still hold positive memories of my Miquon experience. My fantasy is that we move back to Phily solely so that my kids could experience Miquon as well. Any other Londoners, please feel free to get in touch! She sent this update in June, 2003: We moved back to Phila. from England a year ago and we're living in the suburbs for the sake of the schools. Nathan, who is 8, will be going to Miquon camp this summer. We also have a 13-year old, Jeremy. I work at the University of Pennsylvania as the Director of their Major Gifts Program. My husband, Jon, is a freelance writer. My brother, Adam, (1974, I think), is also around. He lives in Swarthmore with his wife and son and daughter. He is Director of the Athletics Program at Swarthmore. (4/11/04)

Josh Wurman '72  wrote on 1/22/06 -- "I graduated Miquon in 1972.  I was in Tony's and Lynn's class for 5th or 6th grade.  I have very fond memories of my Miquon experience and I think it played a major role in forming me and the choices I've made in life. After Miquon I went on to public schools, then to MIT through a doctorate in meteorology.  I was always fascinated by nature and the weather and Miquon let me, even when I was very young, spend time nurturing my curiosity.  I've mid-way through an interesting and creative, but somewhat undisciplined, career (sounds like a consequence of Miquon to me) studying tornadoes, hurricanes, inventing new kinds of radars and the like.  If you've even seen weather radars on trucks on a documentary about severe weather, that's me. Recently, I gave up a tenured  faculty position in Oklahoma in exchange for freedom and lifestyle and have moved to Boulder where I live with my wife, Ling, and 4 little kids.  I founded a small non-profit research company called the Center for Severe Weather Research that continues to study meteorology. I keep only my Miquon diploma mounted in my office."

"Last week I was in a record store in Tokyo, Japan looking for obscure local records, as I always do when I travel. I found a Japanese compilation that featured the song "Seventh Son". The last time I heard that song was when Tony used to sing it to us so many years ago. Listening to the song on the plane, I had very vivid memories of sitting in [Lynn's] classroom and hearing Tony's repertoire including, of course, "Seventh Son". I hope I can find a school as great as Miquon for my kids!

1990 - 1999
We are sad to report that Alex Woodley, the father of Alicia Woodley '90, died of a heart attack at his home on May 26, 2004. The New York Times noted in his obituarity that he had "coached and mentored many Olympic gold-medal sprinters in the 1960's and 1970's as head of the Philadelphia Pioneer Club." Alex, along with his wife Jean, were staunch supporters of Miquon in many ways and contributed to the school and its mission not only during Alicia's time at the school but as alumni parents in the years that have followed. In the wider world, in response to his own experiences, Alex worked tirelessly and selflessly to achieve equity and respect for black athletes. The New York Times quoted Alex: "It's been my life's work. I'd probably be a millionaire right now if I'd put these hours in  private business." We are all proud and grateful to have had Alex Woodley as a Miquon parent and greatly regret his passing.

Alicia Woodley and Gabe Kuriloff, both 1990 Miquon grads, were elected co-presidents of the senior class at Brown University.  Congratulations, Alicia and Gabe!

Barya Schachter ‘92 made the September 13, 1999 issue of Sports Illustrated.  In an article about the Swarthmore-Oberlin football game, Barya is described as “…injured Oberlin offensive lineman…pounding a clipboard and yelling, ‘All right, offense, let’s go!’ even though time had run out and the deficit was 36 points.”  Barya joins Annie Gosfield ’72 on a growing roster of Miquon alumni featured in Sports Illustrated.  Last year, Annie’s composition for keyboard and baseballs was reviewed in an article entitled “Perfect Pitch.”

Erica Frenkel ’93 used Miquon as the subject for an autobiographical essay last year.  In a passage describing science education at Miquon, Erica wrote, “We never once lifted a textbook…No, instead we put on aprons and protective goggles, took out whatever ingredients we chose, mixed them together, and learned for ourselves what combination of ingredients produced which results.  If a child didn’t want to cook, the fire table, a place where many an old crayon melted to its death, was always an alternative.”

Molly Wren '93 is at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

The Class of '94 Read about them when they were about to graduate from high school . . .

Eli Schewel ’97 and his mother, Susan Schewel accompanied a group of about 20 people of assorted ages from their synagogue, Mishkan Shalom, and from St. Vincent’s Catholic Church.  The group helped build sturdy brick and mortar houses after damage during Hurricane Mitch.  Eli wrote in his letter to Miquon, “We dug trenches, mixed cement by hand, constructed re-bar, and laid brick.  I also got a chance to work on my Spanish skills…Two other Miquon alums came, Claire Laver ’95 and Frances Kreimer ’95.  I hope everything at Miquon’s going good and I wish I could visit.”

(12/8/04) It is with great sadness that we must share news of the death of Sabrina Sampson-Knapp '98.  Everyone who knew her at Miquon and at Germantown Friends School is keenly aware of the loss of a bright light in the communities of which she was such a vital part. At this difficult time, our support and good thoughts go out to her family and friends. She will be missed by all of us.

Update from Mom(12/8/04) Gabe Winant '98 is at Stanford University, but was recently back in Philadelphia representing the Stanford debate team at Penn.

Peter Copeland ’98 is doing fine, thank you.

Rena Kreimer '99 identified Miquon as one of two organizations to receive commemorative gifts for her bat mitzvah in April.

Finally, Derek Davis, former Miquon maintenance man, father of alums Morgan '78 and Erin '80 Davis, and grandfather of current students Samantha and Abigail Hesser, has "sold his soul to write corporate P.R. slop." He and his wife Linda White have bought 10 acres upstate and plan to retire there "and talk to woodchucks."
